Diese lateinischen Fügungen bedeuten wörtlich übersetzt »Zustand, in dem (...)« bzw. »der betreffende Zustand vor (...)«. Die Fügung »Status quo« ist besonders in der Rechtssprache gebräuchlich und bezeichnet einen »gegenwärtigen Zustand«; die Fügung »Status quo ante« wird bildungssprachlich gebraucht im Sinne von »Stand vor dem bezeichneten Tatbestand oder Ereignis«: Nach mühevollen Gesprächen zeigte sich bei beiden Parteien die Neigung, zum Status quo ante zurückzukehren. - Marion Gräfin Dönhoff schreibt in ihrem Buch »Die Bundesrepublik in der Ära Adenauer«: »Jahrelang haben also beide Seiten zur Aufrechterhaltung des Status quo verbissen aufgerüstet« (S. 188).
